Maserati Through the Ages
Maserati Club UK Display – Saturday 18 April
Salon Privé London | Royal Hospital Chelsea
On Saturday 18 April, Salon Privé London will host a landmark celebration of one of Italy’s most evocative marques. In partnership with Maserati Club UK, ‘Maserati Through the Ages’ brings together an exceptional, carefully curated timeline of cars spanning more than six decades of Trident excellence, a celebration not only of engineering pedigree, but of unmistakable Italian glamour.
Set against the historic backdrop of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, the display traces Maserati’s evolution, from front-engined competition thoroughbreds of the 1950s to today’s carbon-tubbed super sports cars.
The Competition DNA: 1950s
The story opens with two pillars of Maserati’s post-war identity:
- 1959 Maserati 450S – A recreation of the formidable sports racing car representing the apex of Maserati’s 1950s competition programme.
- 1959 & 1960 Maserati 3500 GT – The model that redefined Maserati for the road, establishing the marque’s grand touring future.
The Golden Era of Grand Touring: 1960s–Early 1970s
The late 1960s and early 1970s represent Maserati’s design zenith. Featured examples include:
- 1968 Mexico
- 1967 & 1969 Mistral
- 1970 & 1972 Ghibli
- 1971 & 1974 Indy
These cars embody Maserati’s fusion of high-speed touring capability and Italian aesthetic confidence.
Mid-Engine Ambition & Wedge-Era Innovation: 1970s
The 1970s brought radical architectural change:
- 1972 & 1973 Bora – Maserati’s first mid-engined production supercar.
- 1975 & 1980 Merak – A V6-powered exotic with distinctive styling.
- 1975 & 1978 Khamsin – A dramatic wedge-shaped GT reflecting bold design direction.
Turbocharged Revival: 1980s–1990s
The display continues with the marque’s turbocharged renaissance:
- 1988 & 1989 Biturbo Spyder
- 1995 Shamal
These models illustrate Maserati’s strategic repositioning during a challenging period, introducing forced induction and compact platforms.
Modern Re-Ascendancy: 2000s
Entering the new millennium, Maserati experienced structural and performance reinvention:
- 2000 3200 GT
- 2001 4200 Coupé
- 2004 GranSport
- 2004 GranSport Spyder
Defining this era of renewed ambition was the extraordinary MC12, a limited-production homologation supercar developed for FIA GT competition. Built around a carbon-fibre monocoque and powered by a naturally aspirated V12, the MC12 reasserted Maserati’s racing credentials on the international stage and remains one of the marque’s most significant modern icons. An example of the MC12 will also be present within the display at Salon Privé London, offering visitors a rare opportunity to see this landmark model in person.
The Contemporary Era: Performance Reimagined
The final chapter showcases Maserati’s modern performance philosophy:
- 2011 – 2018 – A selection of GranTurismo / GranCabrio / MC variants
- 2021–2024 MC20 and latest-generation GranTurismo / GranCabrio models
Central to this era is the MC20, Maserati’s carbon-fibre super sports car powered by the Nettuno V6 engine. Alongside the standard model, the very limited MC Special Series, Icona and Leggenda, pay tribute to Maserati’s racing heritage, drawing inspiration from historic competition liveries while showcasing cutting-edge performance engineering.
Together, the presence of both the V12-engined MC12 and the advanced, Nettuno-powered MC20 within the display demonstrates how Maserati’s current direction continues to balance heritage with innovation.
